One thousand years from tomorrow: Bolivar Eustace Clark, or “Bok” to his friends, is missing his father and trying to cope with life on a backwater colony world known as “Zytemonde” to its inhabitants. The android rulers of Zytemonde take care of humans’ material needs, but also control every aspect of their lives. And for some reason everything seems to be decaying. And the history they’re taught doesn’t make sense. But a visitor to this world, working behind the scenes, has been fomenting subversion, managing a clandestine network of misfits involved with forbidden trade, both in technology and a mind-expanding substance known as “tartar sauce.” When Bok and his friends meet this visitor, they are transported to a very different world, one with advanced technology where people are free to pursue their own goals. And they must figure out how they can rescue Zytemonde’s creative sparks or even avert the colony’s eventual collapse.
